ANNA — On Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016, at about 7:13 p.m. Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Sharp Road at Thompson Schiff Road for car crash involving a tree down and the driver trapped inside.

According to a press release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, upon arrival deputies found that a large dead Ash Tree had fallen across the road when its root system gave out as a vehicle had been passing. The tree was 18 to 24 inches in diameter for most if its length, from the trunk to the first forks, about 25 to 30 feet up the tree.

The tree fell as a vehicle driven by Bonita Nicodemus, of Sidney, was traveling east bound, according to the press release.

It fell onto electrical lines on it’s way down, crushed the top of the vehicle, and collapsed it’s suspension. This trapped the driver in the vehicle as the broken power lines landed across the tree and were touching the vehicle.

The press release said, Anna Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, but had to wait until the power was turned off before any attempt to remove the driver from the vehicle. Once Pioneer Electric arrived on scene and cut power, the driver was able to climb out of the vehicle by herself.

Nicodemus was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital to be checked out as she has complained of a head ache while waiting.

A crew from the Shelby County Highway Department brought a large track-hoe to the scene and removed the tree from the vehicle and off the road.
