SIDNEY — A Sidney woman who struck a motorcycle, resulting in the death of its driver in June 2016, was sentenced in Sidney Municipal Court on Wednesday.

Linda Meininger, 73, outgoing Shelby County Treasurer, was sentenced on one count of vehicular manslaughter to 90 days in jail with 90 days suspended, a $500 fine with $350 suspended, a six month driving suspension, and one year of probation.

She entered a no contest plea to the offense on Nov. 22. No contest is a plea where the defendant neither admits nor disputes a charge, serving as an alternative to a pleading of guilty or not guilty.

Meininger was northbound on Sidney Freyburg Road, on June 28, when she started to make a left turn onto Hoewisher Road. She failed to see a motorcycle driven by Philip Brown, 67, of Sidney.

She turned into the motorcycle’s path, resulting in a near head-on collision. Brown, who was southbound on Sidney Freyburg Road, was ejected from his motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

In court on Wednesday Meininger apologized.

“It was a terrible accident. I feel for the family and everyone involved, but there is nothing I can do to change it,” Meininger said.

Visiting Judge Thomas Hanna said in his time as a judge these cases are the hardest to handle.

“A tragedy has occurred without any intent,” he said.

He said he agrees with its position as a second degree misdemeanor.

It was noted Meininger has intent of taking a driving safety course. Hanna said this may have an impact on the supervision during her probation.
