January 5, 1892

A story has come to light of a mean trick played on the boys at the fire department on New Year’s evening. The men were comfortably seated at a table with smoked roast turkey and other luxuries before them. Just as the host said, “Help yourselves, boys” the fire bell rang. That table was vacated with the dinner untouched as the boys answered the alarm, only to find it was a false one. George Kraft told us not to give the names of the parties and we forbear.

100 Years

January 5, 1917

Charles C. Marshall, who has been associated with P.R. Taylor in the practice of law and who dissolved the partnership this week, has formed a partnership with his brother, Robert E. Marshall, and will continue the practice in addition to his other duties. Robert Marshall has been associated with the legal department of the Pennsylvania Railroad for several years.

Miss Williams, of Cleveland, recently hired by the Community Nurse Association as a visiting nurse, has arrived in Sidney and began her duties this morning.

75 Years

January 5, 1942

A business change of importance in the Anna community took place this week, when the Wentz Brothers garage, formerly owned and managed by F.A. and E.J. Wentz, was sold to the four sons of F.A. Wentz: Lloyd, William, Harold and Russell Wentz.

American motorists faced dark roads ahead today following the announcement by Price Control Administrator Leon Henderson that automobile production would be limited to 200,000 for the balance of the war.

50 Years

January 5, 1967

DALLAS – Jack Ruby, the killer of presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, died of cancer today in the same hospital where both President Kennedy and Oswald died three years ago. Ruby was 55.

John Shinn, 729 Crescent Drive, was elected president of the Sidney Board of Education, when members of the board completed their re-organization at the meeting Monday evening.

At the same time, board members named William Hoewischer, R.R. 4, Sidney, as vice president. Virgil Ward continues in the office of clerk. Other members of the board of education are T.W. Hunter, M.D, and Lee Kaufman.

New officers were installed Tuesday evening during an appreciation dinner of the Sacred Heart Altar Society. The dinner, held in the Holy Angels Water Street school, was given for the incoming and outgoing officers and preceded the business meeting.

The Rev. Vincent Robers installed Mrs. Herbert Hoying as president; Mrs. Thomas Sekas, vice president; Mrs. Paul Gaier, second vice president; Mrs. Raphael Echemann, secretary; and Mrs. Bernard Danzig, treasurer.

25 Years

January 5, 1992

While conceding that home prices have dipped in recent months, Marilyn Henson, President of the Shelby County Board of Realtors is unwilling to say that the amount has dropped to the level indicated in the U.S. Census Bureau data.

The Census Bureau reported that the median value of homes in Shelby County has fallen to $59,900 in 1990, down 4.7 percent from the $62,859 determined in 1980, while Mrs. Henson reports that these figures are $5,000 to $10,000 below what median priced homes are selling for in Shelby County today.
