SIDNEY — On Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at approximately 11:35 a.m., a Sidney Fire Department Medic truck was stolen from the patient loading area at Wilson Memorial hospital.
The medic crew had just transported a patient to the Emergency Department and was restocking supplies when they were notified by hospital personnel that the patient they had just delivered had walked out of the doors, jumped into the medic and took off.
An on-duty police officer was at the emergency department and witnessed the event. Police dispatchers immediately advised the Ohio Highway State Patrol and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office of the situation.
The suspect drove the medic at a high rate of speed west on state Route 47 and caused a serious accident when he attempted to turn North onto Vandemark Road and collided head-on with a Chevy truck occupied by a married elderly couple.
According to witnesses, the suspect exited the ambulance and ran trying to break into another vehicle when nearby citizens ran after the suspect and apprehended him until police arrived on scene.
Sidney medics responded to the scene and rendered treatment and transport for the driver of the pickup truck to Wilson Memorial hospital.
Police arrived on scene and placed the subject in custody with felony charges pending.
