Positive attitude helps shooting victim

WEST LIBERTY (AP) — A 16-year-old boy who was shot at his school last month says a positive attitude has helped him cope as he continues a remarkable recovery from critical wounds.

Logan Cole discussed his recovery in an interview this week with radio station WBLL in Bellefontaine, The Springfield News-Sun reported. He was hospitalized and required surgery after the Jan. 20 attack at his high school in West Liberty.

“It’s nice to be getting out and seeing people and getting kind of back to normal,” said Cole, adding that he is feeling “pretty good” and is glad to be attending classes and other school activities.

Authorities have said that Cole was a random victim of 17-year-old Ely Serna, who fired a 12-gauge shotgun.

“When it happened, I didn’t know what to think … didn’t know how bad it was,” Cole said. “From what I’ve heard, it’s a miracle. … It shows you how quickly things could end.”

He said that keeping a positive, forgiving attitude is part of his coping strategy and that his faith has grown even stronger during his ordeal.

“The way God helped me through has kind of improved my attitude toward it,” he said. “It helps me get through it to be positive.”

Serna is charged in juvenile court with attempted murder, felonious assault and other offenses. He has denied the charges.

A judge ordered a competency evaluation of Serna at his attorney’s request.
