Recipe deadline extended

SIDNEY — Organizers of the 31st annual Sidney Daily News Harvest Holiday Cookbook project have extended deadlines for receipt of recipes.

They report that recipes have been steadily arriving, but they want to keep accepting them through the announcement, still to come, of who the prize sponsors will be. Winners in each of six categories will be awarded $50 cash prizes provided by Sidney Daily News advertisers. One of those winners will also be awarded the $250 grand prize, compliments of an advertiser. Because sometimes, people who support the businesses who advertise with the Sidney Daily News want to compete for a specific category prize, contest organizers have added 10 days to the submission time, so no one will be left out.

To be in this contest, home cooks now have until 5 p.m., Oct. 5, to submit up to three recipes in each of the following six categories:

• Main dishes: casseroles and entrees — the dishes that anchor a meal.

• Salads and sides: vegetables, pastas, salads, rice dishes — the foods that make a meal interesting and healthy.

• Desserts: pies, cakes, puddings, popovers, fruit dishes, ice creams — all the sweets that end a meal.

• Holiday traditions: those dishes the family would miss if they weren’t on the holiday menu this year.

• Appetizers and snacks: gnoshes, grab-and-go treats, candies, cookies, bars, canapes and party favorites.

• Slow-cooker creations: soups, stews, one-pot meals that cook all day and are ready to eat at the end of a day at work.

All recipes must be typed. They must include the names of the dishes, the categories they’re submitted in, complete lists of ingredients and instructions, and the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of the submitters.

Emailed recipes are preferred and can be sent to Recipes in hard copy can be mailed or delivered to the Sidney Daily News, 1451 N. Vandemark Road, Sidney, OH 45365.

Contest officials will select four finalists in each category. The finalists will be asked to prepare their dishes and present them for judging on Cook-Off Day, Oct. 24, at the Crossroads in Hardin. Professional chefs Michelle Bridges, executive chef of Wilson Health in Sidney, Todd Uhlir, of Troy, owner of Basil’s on Market in Troy, and Adam Ruiz, of Troy, head chef and kitchen manager of The Bridge in Sidney, will select a winner in each category and a grand prize winner.

All submitted recipes will be published in the Harvest Holiday Cookbook, which will be distributed in issues of the Sidney Daily News on Nov. 21 and available for purchase after that date.
