PIQUA — Edison State Community College welcomed Ohio Senate President Keith Faber and Senator Bill Beagle to the Piqua Campus on September 22 for a roundtable discussion. Edison was selected to hold the discussion, which provided legislative updates and gathered input from business leaders, chamber members, and educational leaders from across the Miami Valley.

During the roundtable, provisions within the budget were discussed which would help the State of Ohio by lowering the cost of public higher education. Faber elaborated on the Senate’s five percent challenge that encouraged colleges and universities across the state to seek methods to reduce costs by five percent. Increasing the State’s share of instruction by 8.5% for Ohio’s public colleges was also discussed.

“The Ohio Senate will continue to focus on the development of business-friendly initiatives in the Miami Valley and across Ohio,” Faber said. “This goes hand in hand with the need to create job-training opportunities to produce the skilled workforce required in today’s increasingly diverse economy. This will certainly benefit the business community and workforce alike and ensures that Ohio continues the trend of positive economic growth.”

“After working in other states, it is wonderful to be back in a state that supports and values higher education. Ohio legislators understand the role of community colleges in workforce training and transfer education and have shepherded funds accordingly–even in tough times,” said Edison President Dr. Doreen Larson.

Senators Faber and Beagle also touched on the upcoming ballot initiatives that will be placed in front of Ohio voters, specifically Issues 1 and 2 and the negative consequences that could occur if Issue 3 were to be passed. Following legislative updates, Senator Faber and Beagle fielded questions and opened the floor for suggestions from those in attendance.

Those in attendance included, Jeff Bartone, Hock’s Pharmacy; Paul Broerman, Choice Comfort Services; Phil Cox, Royal Crest Agency; Jim Dromey, American Honda; Eric Joo, Miller Valentine Group and Montgomery County Fairgrounds Developer; Dick Lange, VOSS Honda; Dr. Doreen Larson, Edison; Rob Long, Dysinger and Patry; Nancy Luce, Upper Valley Career Center; Darryl Mehaffie, Edison; Scott Miller, Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce; Bud O’Brien, Miami County Commissioner and GOP Chair; Jim Pancoast, Premier Health; Kathi Roetter Troy Area Chamber of Commerce; Kathy Sherman, Unity National Bank; Lloyd Shoemaker, TriVista Placement Services; Liz Sonnanstine, Tipp City Chamber of Commerce; Michael Van Haaren, Stillwater Technologies; and JC Wallace, Troy Area Chamber of Commerce.
