SIDNEY — A Troy man has been arrested after allegedly firing shots at a Sidney business on Monday. Three Sidney City Schools were secured while the incident was unfolding.

According to a Sidney Police Department press release, Bradley J. Ellis, 23, of Troy, was charged with three fourth degree felonies: two counts of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon.

At approximately 12:13 p.m., Monday, Sidney Police Department received a call someone on a motorcycle shot into the air and the building of Laser Fab on Fair Road.

The motorcycle then fled the scene toward the interstate at a high rate of speed. After receiving a description and learning direction of travel, the suspect was located on Interstate 75, near the 78 ramp, by the Ohio State Patrol, was taken into custody and transported to the Shelby County Jail.

According to the press release, it is believed at this time that Ellis had an ongoing dispute with another male individual who was at the location and because of that dispute Ellis brandished a handgun and discharged the weapon.

Sidney City Schools put out a one call after receiving notice from the Sidney Police Department about a potential active shooter. Superintendent John Scheu said Emerson, Sidney Middle School and Sidney High School, which are schools in that area, were secured. Scheu said within 15 minutes of receiving the active shooter call, word was received the suspect had been apprehended.

“In order to not induce any un-needed stress or panic, each building decided not to go on lockdown — especially since it was such a short time later we knew the active shooter was apprehended,” Scheu said in an emailed response about the incident.

“Each building principal and security officer handled the situation in a calm and professional manner without inducing panic among staff and students. Bottom line is that all students were secured and safe,” Scheu said in the email.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sidney Police Department at 937-498-2351.
