Jordan mulls bid for House Oversight chair

LIMA — U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan is on a short list of Republican candidates who are in the running to replace U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, but he’s not saying whether he will actively pursue it.

“I haven’t made any decision yet,” Jordan said in an emailed statement. “I love the work on the Oversight committee, and I think I would have strong support among the committee members, but the process for determining chairmen is not always very favorable to guys like me who don’t always go along with the establishment.”

Jordan, who has clashed with his Republican counterparts as co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, competed for the position more than two years ago, but the House Steering Committee went with Chaffetz instead. This time around, Jordan is being considered along with U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., and U.S. Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, according to multiple reports.

Gowdy is considered the front-runner, according to a Politico report that cited multiple senior House Republicans. Gowdy is a former federal prosecutor who previously chaired the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

A spokeswoman for Gowdy told Politico that he is “talking to members in the conference about the qualities they believe are most important for the next chairman to possess,” though she would not confirm that he is actively vying for the position.

Chaffetz announced Thursday he intends to resign from Congress effective June 30, after serving in the House for nearly nine years. The congressman has served as chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee since January 2015.

The Committee is the main investigative body in the U.S. House, making it one of the government’s more powerful committees. The chairman of the committee is one of only three chairmen in the House with the authority to issue subpoenas without a committee vote or consultation with a ranking member.

The person chosen for the chairman position would oversee an investigation into whether President Donald Trump encouraged the FBI to drop a federal investigation of his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

The House Steering Committee is expected to announce Chaffetz’s replacement in early June.
