June 17, 1892

The ship canal from Toledo to Cincinnati, talking in such growing Shelby County villages as Loramie , Newport and Lockington, is a dream of the past. The appropriation by Congress for its survey has been recalled, and the item stricken out of the Rivers and Harbors bill. This ends it for at least two years, and probably forever.

Miss Ida B. Haslup, the very efficient principal of the Sidney High school has been tendered the same position in the schools of Pueblo, Colo., at a salary of $1,350 a year. Miss Haslup has been principal of the high school for five years and prior to that was in charge of the Grammar grade. If she accepts, Sidney will lose one of its best teachers.

June 17, 1917

Norman Gutman and Lawrence Behrns, of Botkins, were injured yesterday when they were pinned beneath a car operated by Behrns after it had overturned near McCartyville. The pair, with Leo Monger were on their way to Loramie reservoir to fish when the accident happened. Their injuries were not serious.

The Shelby County Dry Federation completed arrangements for its first big meeting to be held Tuesday evening in the Presbyterian Church. A dinner will precede the meeting at which addresses will be given by John Breese and James E. White, of Columbus.

June 17, 1942

Shelby County’s first war chest for World War II will get underway the latter part of July, as a result of plans completed at a meeting of the organizing committee held last evening. The campaign will seek to raise funds for all war relief agencies. Members of the committee are: Harry Forsyth, chairman; Cecil Quellhorst, executive secretary; Dave Shelton, treasurer; W.E. Whipp, Judge D.F. Mills, R.W. Munger, Carl Berger, Walter Meranda, Charles Conley, C.D. Learch, William Amos.

50 Years Ago

June 17, 1967

Members of the Pemberton Methodist Church, Pemberton, will hold a farewell courtesy for the Rev. James Rice family Tuesday evening, June 20, at 8 p.m. at the church. Rev. Rice has accepted an appointment to the West Unity, Ohio, Methodist Church and will be preaching his first sermon there on Sunday June 25.

Rain fell in Sidney today, sending shoppers to cover, putting windshield wipers back in action and causing nearby farmers to shout with joy. The shower started at 12:45 p.m. ending a period which has seen only 11/100 of an inch precipitation here during the entire month of June, according to David Fette, forecaster. If the rain was general throughout the county and if the fall was adequate, it meant thousands of dollars to farmers.

June 17, 1992

Five year old Sarah Heifner of Sidney received honorable mention in the March 1992 Cricket League International writing competition. For this contest , entrants were ask to write a poem about socks. Her name appears in the June 1992 issue of the award winning children’s magazine, She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Heifner.

FORT LORAMIE- When Louis and Patricia Siegrist planned a trip to Florida earlier this year, they envisioned a visit to Walt Disney World, a pleasant outing at the beach and a family birthday party. None of the plans included an ambulance ride to the hospital, an emergency Caesarean section or the early arrival of what doctors and nurses in Orlando refer to as a “Disney baby.” I never heard of that reference before but I certainly know about it now”,Mrs. Siegrist says pointing to her 3-1/2 month old son, Nicholas Allen. “The vacation took a much different turn than expected.”
