June 19, 1892

During a heavy shower yesterday noon, J.W. Kendall, while in the act of adjusting a water conductor to his cistern, was shocked by a bolt of lightning. It first struck the roof of his home, tearing off shingles, and passed so near Kendall that he was hurled several feet distance against a building. He lost his powers of speech for several minutes but did not lose consciousness.

At nine o’clock this morning the mercury stood at 110 degrees-in the sun.

100 Years Ago

June 19, 1917

While Dr. W.D. Stockstill was leaving his barnyard southwest of Sidney this morning, his automobile ran against a cable he had stretched between the gate posts. The top of the car was torn off, the windshield broken and other damage done to the auto. Dr. Stockstill threw up his arm to protect himself and the arm was broken. A traveling man riding with him was not injured.

J.B. Shine announced today that he plans to sell the “Sunshine Bottling Works”. He stated that he has accepted a traveling position and is to report Aug. 1. If he cannot sell the operation by that time, the business will continue as before with his son, William Shine, in charge.

June 19, 1942

Sidney police today were continuing their investigation of an oil drum and bricks placed on the B&O railroad tracks near the Park street bridge. The articles were found yesterday afternoon about 50 feet north of the bridge. Officers are of the opinion they were placed there by some boys.

The annual June outing of the Johnson Candy Co. was held yesterday, when the entire personnel of the company enjoyed an all-day picnic at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zimpfer at Koverman’s landing.

June 19, 1967

It’s off to California for a five-day visit for three youths on Monday, guests of the Sidney IGA Foodliner. The trio were the winners in the recent contest conducted by the local supermarket in conjunction with other IGA stores in the area. Making the trip will be Tom Kerrigan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kerrigan, Bruce Pence, son of Mrs. Rosemary Pence and Jeff Rickert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rickert of St. Marys.

The congregation of St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church of Anna celebrated the 15th ordination anniversary of their pastor, Rev. Paul Koehler, last Sunday.

June 19, 1992

MINSTER- He did his job during WWII. Recognition for doing one’s job is appropriate, however even if it come 47 years late. Belated or not, World War II Veteran Evan Lovegrove is proud of his recently receive citation for the Bronze Star “for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy during World War II. Lovegrove fought with the 179th Infantry Regiment of the 45th division of the U.S. Army. Nicknamed the”Thunderbirds”, the 45th was instrumental in capturing Nuremberg , the German city where the Nazi Party gained initial strength . He was involved in combat several times, including a conflict which was part of the Battle of the Bulge. He said that artillery fire he and his men were subjected to was the most terrifying part of his war experience.
