125 Years

July 13, 1892

At a meeting of council last night, the purchase of an additional 1,000 feet of fire hose was authorized. The hose will be used to equip a hose cart to be located in the northwest section of the town near the pole and shaft factory. Mr. Anderson, of the Buckeye Churn Co., has agreed to erect the building and the several factories will drill their men and have them in readiness in case of fire in that neighborhood. Council also authorized the borrowing of $7,000 to improve the waterworks, extend water lines and put additional hydrants around the square.

Owing to the formal opening of the club house at Tawawa lake, and events connected therewith the band concert is unavoidably postponed until Friday night. The band found it just impossible to get all the members together on Thursday because of the various social events and meetings for that evening.

Only $4,000 for a round-trip ticket from Sidney to Niagara Falls is being offered by the C.H. & D. railway. It is good on Thursday, July 28 and returning Aug. 2.

100 Years

July 13, 1917

An election will be held in Sidney on Aug. 14, the same day as the primary, to vote on the question of issuing bonds in the amount of $10,000 for the purpose of paying the city’s portion of the construction, in cooperation with the county commissioners, permanent structures of bridges over the Miami and Erie canal feeder at Miami and Ohio avenues, and North, Court, South and Water streets.

A joint meeting of the Shelby and Champaign count commissioners was held yesterday afternoon on the Mosquito creek ditch. The hearing was on the engineer’s report, which was accepted.

Miss Martha Ellen Swain entertained the members of the Unique Embroidery club with several musical selections, when they were guests of Mrs. J.B. Swain for their regular meeting yesterday afternoon at her home on Forest street.

On board 24 cattle cars, more than 1,100 members of the Industrial Workers of the World were shipped from Bisbee, Ariz. into New Mexico. The men were driven from the city by deputy sheriffs and about 2,500 armed men after they had prevented miners from working.

75 Years

July 13, 1942

The Ohio procurement and assignment committee summoned the following Shelby county physicians to Columbus today for conferences relative to application for commissions in the United States Army: Dr. Paul Bratten, Dr. Frank Downey, Dr. E.P. Sparks, Dr. Harry Wain, Dr. Lee Weis, Dr. Russell Wiessinger, all of Sidney, Dr. E.R. Paul, Botkins; Dr. J.W. Tirey, of Anna, and Dr. W.A. Schroer, of Fort Loramie.

The eighth annual Policeman’s Ball will be held Aug. 1 at the Avon Lake club it was announced today by members of the police department who are sponsoring the affair. Music will be provided by Harold Greenamyer and his orchestra.

Mrs. B.D. Heck, Mrs. James B. Royon, Mrs. Robert Neher, and Mrs. C.W. Pickering, returned home last evening from the Methodist School of Christian Service held at the Sabina conference grounds, with nearly 450 women registered for the four-day affair.

Some 130 members and guests attended the annual frolic of the Midwestern chapter, Ohio Society of Professional Engineers held yesterday afternoon and evening at the Sidney Country Club. Roscoe Bowman, assistant division engineer of District 7, was general chairman.

50 Years

July 13, 1967

Here’s another sign that the 1967 Shelby county fair is drawing near: Workers who intend to serve food in the various stands on the fairgrounds were reminded by Dr. Robert Oyer, health commissioner, that they must have food handler’s cards. They are asked to apply for the cards at least a week before the fair begins on July 29.

JACKSON CENTER – A tentative date of Aug. 9 has been set for a meeting of stockholders of the Jackson Center Community Development Co. Stockholders will be asked to vote for new board members and to consider the sale of the community’s medical center. An offer has been made by Dr. G.F. Aukerman, one of the doctors whose offices are located there. The building was constructed about 18 months ago with money contributed by the shareholders. The purpose then was to attract a doctor to the community by providing office space.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The 1967 All-Star game between the National and the American leagues wasn’t the most exciting but it was the longest in history – 15 innings. And it provided a satisfying springboard to fame for a substitute first basemen, Tony Perez of the Cincinnati Reds who hit the game-winning homer for the Nationals in the 15th inning to give them a 2-1 victory. Perez replaced Richie Allen of Philadelphia late in the game and he filled his shoes admirably.

25 Years

July 13, 1992

The Sidney-Shelby County Board of Health will be relocating. A group has been formed to look at various real estate sites. Richard Breece, County Health Commissioner, has been involved in the search. During the meeting, board members learned that tragically, board member Dick Gower had been killed earlier in the day in a traffic accident. Future meetings will be held concerning the selection of the site for the relocated health department.

The Salvation Army had a groundbreaking ceremony. It will be constructing 10,200 square foot addition to its building. The addition will house its daycare and related activities. This information was report by Captain Filipe Tamayo. Southwest Ohio Lt. Col. Lawrence Moritz of the Salvation Army was present to conduct the ribbon cutting.

The Village of Russia will finally get railroad crossing protection. Village council learned that the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has approved the expenditure of funds to install automatic railroad crossing gates at the Russia Road crossing in the Village. It has been the scene of a number of serious accidents over the years. The good news is that the PUCO will be paying the entire cost.
