SIDNEY — The community support for a church mission scholarship took Tim and Allison Martin, of Sidney, by surprise. Their son, Ty Austin Martin, 17, passed away in July 2016 while on a mission trip.

“I was absolutely surprised. I thought we might sell 100 tickets,” said Allison Martin Sunday afternoon.

The final number of tickets sold was more than 250 and the event raised $1,300, said Martin. Victoria Jennings, of Piqua, was the winner of the chair and table.

Martin said they had planned to do a taco night in March and raffle the chair off then. Because the church wasn’t sending a mission team to Mexico this year, they decided not to hold taco night.

Instead, they decided to raffle of the chair and table during fair week. In additon to being active in his church, Ty was also a 4-H member.

Ty was on a church mission trip in Tijuana, Mexico in 2016, when he passed away. He and other members of First United Methodist Church were staying at the Rosarito Orphanage. He had been on two mission trips before the one last year.

The money from the event will go to a scholarship fund at the church to assist people going on missions.

The orange Adirondack chair and side table was donated by Swings N Things. The items were on display all week at the Shelby County Fair.

The family is planning to make the drawing an annual event at the fair.
