TROY — The Operation Street Smart Drug Education Program offering insight into today’s drug trends and youth is coming to Miami County Sept. 7.

The free program is designed to educate parents, health care workers, educators, DARE/school resource officers, law enforcement, social workers and anyone who deals with youth on a daily basis.

The program will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Edison Community College, 1973 Edison Dr., Piqua. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided.

The day-long educational opportunity sponsored by the UVMC Foundation will feature the program created by the Franklin County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Office. It provides up-to-date information on drug trends, terminology, paraphernalia, concealment techniques and physiological effects.

Operation Street Smart is a collaborative effort between DARE and the Franklin County Special Investigations Unit, the sheriff’s office undercover narcotics branch. The program shares experience and knowledge of undercover officers to help adults obtain important information about youth drug abuse today.

Operation Street Smart has received the FBI Director’s Award for Community Leadership and the Project Know Award.

“The UVMC Foundation is proud to provide the funding to bring this important program to Miami County,” said Kathleen Scarbrough, president of the UVMC Foundation.

“Sadly, the current heroin epidemic has not spared our local communities. It is the UVMC Foundation’s hope that parents, teachers, concerned community members, and health care professionals come to this training,” she said. “After all, knowledge is power and the more we all know, the better able we are to protect the children and youth in our community.”

Seating will be limited. To register, or for questions about continuing education hours, 937-440-4615 or email [email protected].
