Thursday, Aug. 24, 1892

The commissioners are having a new floor put down on the North Street river bridge and on the path way of the Poplar Street Canal bridge. The latter place has been in bad condition and its improvement was very much needed. Yesterday a young gentleman stepped on one of the loose boards and was almost precitated into the canal.

Thursday, Aug. 24, 1917

H.T. Ruese has been appointed as a member of the Shelby County liquor license board. The term is for four years. He succeeds William Klipstine who has served on the board for two terms.

A valuable race horse jumped from an express car of an eastbound train about 7 o’clock this morning as the train was speeding along about a mile east of the Tawawa Lake club house. The train was immediately stopped and the horse was found in the ditch with both front legs broken. The injuries were so serious it had to be disposed of.

Thursday, Aug. 24, 1942

G.E. Daugherty, of Ashland, is the new assistant manager at the local Montgomery Ward store, according to an announcement made today by Arthur Tremain, store manager.

50 years ago

Thursday, Aug. 24, 1967

Nosed out in his third heat, Bob Lonsbury, Sidney’s 1967 Soap Box Derby champion, saw his vanquisher suffer a similar fate in the finals of the All-American Soap Box Derby at Akron Saturday. Lonsbury, who won his first two heats, lost to Stanley Ranum of Aberdeen, Wash., in a photo-finish on his third trip down the derby course.

Thursday, Aug. 24, 1992

Matthew Meyer is a new teacher in the Jackson Center Schools this year. He teaches language arts in the junior high school. New teachers in the Botkins Schools this year are Melissa Priddy and Tina Mesker. Ms. Priddy is a vocal music teacher in K-12th grades and Ms. Mesker is a learning disabilities tutor in K-12.
