SIDNEY — The cornfield fire that burned for about 2 1/2 hours Thursday afternoon caused $50,000 in damage.

The owner of the field, Kevin Martin, reported 50 acres of standing field corn was destroyed.

According to Sidney Department of Fire & Emergency Services officials, the cause of the fire is still undetermined.

Anna, Botkins, Fort Loramie, Jackson Center, Lockington, Port Jefferson and Sidney fire departments responded to the fire at Knoop-Johnston and McCloskey School roads.

Factors in battling the fire were the windy conditions and that it was dry, standing corn, fire officials said. Winds were blowing the fire northeast toward a plot of land that had already been harvested, which was stopping the fire from spreading farther.

Comments on the Sidney Daily New’s Facebook Page said the fire could be seen for miles in all directions.
