SIDNEY — The Shelby County Probate Court had a busy year in 2017. Case filings for new estates were up 13 percent and filings for other matters were consistent with 2016.

Judge Jeffrey J. Beigel has submitted the following report:

The Probate Court’s responsibilities include supervising the processing of estates, guardianships of minors, guardianships of adults, adoptions and will contests. The Court also handles name changes, issues marriage licenses and oversees trusts.

In 2017 the court:

• Updated online Probate Court records to include tickler systems to assist filers, guardians and attorneys in handling matters;

• Hosted a free guardianship seminar for people serving as guardians of incompetent adults;

• Deposited over $50,000 into the General Fund.

• Introduced online marriage license applications to assist customers and reduce waiting times at the Clerk’s office.

• Engaged the ongoing services of the Ohio Supreme Court’s consulting team to review the Court’s practices and procedures. This service is available at no cost to the Court and helps to ensure that we are implementing the best practices to serve the community.
