ANNA — An Anna man is facing child sex-related charges in U.S. District Court.

Robert S. Jones is accused of sexual exploitation of children; coercion and enticement; and receipt and possession of child pornography, according to federal prosecutors.

In July 2014, The Bellefontaine Examiner reported Jones, 26 years old at the time, was arrested in the local area and was also a sex offender last registered in Vermillion County, Illinois. He had been living in Sidney at the time and was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor relating to an investigation into his reported relationship with a 16-year-old Lakeview, Ohio, girl.

Logan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to assist Bellefontaine Police Department officers with a traffic stop on July 22, 2014. While interviewing the driver, Jones, and passenger, the 16-year-old girl, deputies and officers were informed that the pair had met on the Internet. During the past several weeks, the two reportedly had engaged in sexual activity four to five times, according to The Examiner in 2014.

Logan County deputies worked with Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies, law enforcement officials from Indiana, Illinois and the U.S. Marshal’s Office to secure a federal warrant relating to leaving Illinois and failing to register a new address as a registered sex offender.

In August 2014, Jones was charged with one count of failure to verify address, a felony of the fourth-degree, in the Shelby County Common Pleas Court. According to the indictment, “he, an Illinois sex offender, moved to Shelby County, on June 2, 2014 and failed to register with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office within three days of his coming into Shelby County.”

Eventually the charge was dismissed.

Federal prosecutors told The Dayton Daily News they could not elaborate any more on the current case because it is under seal. They did say there may be more alleged local victims.
