Harvest season is done, time for Agronomy Day

0

Hasn’t the weather been beautiful the past couple of weeks??!!?? Yes, we’ve had some rain … some wind … there’s indication that winter will be here sometime … However, have you noticed the “sunshine?” The “nice” temps? It’s hard to believe we’re into the middle of November … ! And, it’s been a crazy-busy time on the farm!

Yes, harvest is done; all the cover crops are seeded and even the corn-stalk ground is turning green! We spent all last weekend taking care of the Fuzzy Kids and Babies! We already had them in a portion of the cover-crops-after-wheat field; on Saturday, we gave them the whole 10 acres! (That meant more posts and tape, but it’s been worth it: They’ve been out eating everyday [except when raining], so the hay is still there!) On Sunday, we hauled manure. Of course, that meant that on Wednesday we took the afternoon to re-position the manger we had built a couple weeks ago. (Needed to drop it that 12-inches so they could get to it …) The good news is the weather was nice and we’re workin’ in the barn!

I’ve already gotten some calls from folks, so it’s time to let you know: West Ohio Agronomy Day is coming! I’m getting the pieces in order and the schedule put together. We’ve got Fred from Purdue once again and also Bob Nielson from Purdue, plus OSU personnel. However, there is a change coming:

West Ohio Agronomy Day will be held on the second Monday in January (Jan. 11) at St. Michael’s Hall in Fort Loramie, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The daytime program will be the same format as before: marketing update, program, lunch, finish program. We will have Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits, Fertilizer Applicator Certification Training for those who already hold a Pesticide Applicator’s License, and Certified Crop Advisor CEUs. It is at this program that Fred, Bob, and others will be presenting.

NOTE: We are changing the evening portion: This will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Days Inn, state Route 47/Interstate 75 here in Sidney. We’ll have supper at 5 p.m. with the program (Private Pesticide Applicator Training and FertCert for those with a Pesticide Applicator License) to begin at 5:30 p.m. This program will run 5:30 to 11 p.m., including paperwork time and a short break. This program will be conducted by our OSU Educators in the area. Yes, this is the same time frame we had last year; it was just tacked onto the daytime program … (And, yes, I caught a lot of flak because of some “football game” being held that same evening! Also, it was just a “huge” day …)

So, there ya have it! Those of you with Pesticide Licenses that renew this year should be receiving a mailing from ODA by Mid-December (hopefully, sooner!). Registration details will be included. Just know West Ohio Agronomy Day is coming & you’ll be hearing more!!

We’re also accepting applications for our Master Gardener Training Class that will be held on Thursdays, March 3 through May 5. Contact our office for an application packet/more information!
