Extension offering New and Small Farm College

OSU Extension in Auglaize and Hardin counties are offering the New and Small Farm College this year. This program is designed for those interested in starting or expanding a small farming operation: practical knowledge on a variety of topics. Enrollment deadline is Jan. 2.

This New and Small Farm College will be held on the OSU Lima Campus, 4240 Campus Drive, east of Lima. Classes will be held on Thursday evenings, Jan. 19 through March 9. There will be a light dinner at 6 p.m. with the sessions being conducted from 6:30-9 p.m. Some of the topics to be discussed include Getting Started (goal setting, business planning, resources, etc.); Sources of Assistance (government agencies, grants, etc.); Financial & Production Recordkeeping and Taxes (balance sheets, etc.); and Marketing (cooperatives, direct marketing, niche markets, etc.).

The cost for this program is $150 and includes a binder of resource materials, meals, and one soil sample evaluation. Additional family members can attend for $100 each; no extra binder. Weed Management 101 – Welcome to the Jungle will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Wright State University – Lake Campus (7600 Lake Campus Dr., Celina). There will be both afternoon (1:15-4 p.m.) and evening (6:15-9 p.m.) sessions. A free meal will be offered before each program (12:30 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m.).

The Central Ohio Precision Ag Symposium will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12 at All Occasions Catering, 6986 Waldo-Delaware Rd., Waldo Ohio from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This symposium will feature the most current technologies available in precision agriculture, shared by Dr. John Fulton, Dr. Scott Shearer, and Dr. Erdal Ozkan. There will also be industry experts on hand to share their technologies and insights on today’s farming technology.

This symposium will provide Continuing Education Credits (CEU’s) for Certified Crop Advisors and Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits (Commercial and Private applied for) . The $50 registration fee includes a buffet lunch, breaks, and handouts. Seating is limited; the registration deadline is Thursday, December 29th.
