The 2018 NCR-Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Farmer Rancher Grant Call for Proposals is now open. Farmers in this region are invited to submit grant proposals to explore sustainable agriculture solutions to problems on the farm. Sustainable agriculture is good for the environment, profitable, and socially responsible. Proposals should show how you plan to use your own innovative ideas to explore sustainable agriculture options and how you will share project results. Projects should emphasize research or education/demonstration. There are three types of competitive grants: $7,500 maximum for individual grants, $15,000 maximum for a team of two farmers from separate operations who are working together, and up to $22,500 group grants for three or more farmers from separate operations who are working together. Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education – SARE – expects to fund about 40 projects in the twelve-state North Central Region. A total of approximately $459,000 is available for this program. NCR-SARE is accepting online submissions for the Farmer Rancher Grant Program. Interested applicants can find the call for proposals, useful information for completing a proposal, and more information about the online submission system at http://www.northcentralsare.org/. Under “Grants,” check on “Our Grant Programs” and select “Farmer Rancher.” The deadline for proposals is Dec. 7, 2017, at 4 p.m. CST. You can find more information about sustainable agriculture at www.sare.org.

The Small Farms Center, sponsored by the Ohio State Sustainable Agriculture Team draws a good crowd at Farm Science Review each year. They offer a number of programs each day. (Sorry, I’m not teaching this year!)

Some of the topics for 2017 include Obtaining a SARE Grant for Your Farm Business, Best Practices for Marketing Your Products Directly to Consumers, Growing and Marketing Cut Flowers, Considerations for Investing in Solar Energy, Organic Ag and Local Food Systems, Opportunities and Considerations in Transitioning to Organic Grain Production, Goat Production, Small-Scale Swine Production: Producing High-Quality Pork, Water Quality in Aquaculture and Aquaponics, and Inspecting and Selecting Farm Implements for Your Small Farm. Trust me, there are more!!

Farm Science Review is Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 19-21. Tickets are $7 pre-sale; $10 at the gate. We have tickets for sale at our office. There is so much to see and do … even for non-farmers!! It is a great way to spend a day! You can find the total schedule of programs and activities at fsr.osu.edu. Check under “Visitors” for the “demonstration and event schedule.”

Hope you had a great holiday weekend! Fall is coming …
