Archbold – From churning butter, playing croquet and building a scarecrow to digging potatoes, cutting wood with a bucksaw and exploring a straw maze … Fall on the Farm promises to be a wonderful day for families to create special memories at Sauder Village. On Saturday, Oct. 14, a full day of engaging activities will allow guests to experience what life was like on an Ohio farm more than 100 years ago. Oct. 14 is also Scout Day with free admission for Boy and Girl Scouts visiting Sauder Village for this special event.
“Fall on the Farm is a fun day for parents, grandparents and children to create special memories together while experiencing life in rural northwest Ohio many years ago,” said Kim Krieger, PR/Media Relations. “As guests get involved with traditional fall activities they will gain a better understanding of how our ancestors lived while having a lot of fun at the same time!”
Throughout the day, guests will be encouraged to try many traditional, hands-on activities. Children will have an opportunity to make butter, play with old- fashioned toys and games, make leaf rubbings and try cutting wood with a bucksaw. Guests can also help dig potatoes, make a wood bead necklace, build a scarecrow, learn about bees and play Battle Ball and other Native American games. There will be cow patty bingo and many pumpkin-themed games and pumpkin decorating. Children will also enjoy exploring the always-popular straw maze in the Stuckey Barn. Throughout the day a Harvest Home Service will be held in the Village Church to celebrate the bounty of the harvest.
Guests will want also want to stop by Burlington Glass Works to visit with glass artist Mark Matthews along with guest artist John McCormick from St. Louis, Missouri. McCormick, maker of “Shamrock Marbles,” will be at the Village with his famous Marble Making machine. He will be demonstrating this modern reproduction of one of the first mechanized sphere making machines in the world – a joining of principals from 1903 with 2017. A little modern technology is applied to the process because the machine is now motor driven instead of hand driven.
As part of this fun-filled day, Sauder Village is also recognizing the accomplishments of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. To honor local Scouts, Girl and Boy Scouts will receive free admission on Saturday, Oct. 14. (Scout must be in uniform).
Other upcoming events at Sauder Village include Community Health/Fulton County Appreciation Day on October 21 (sponsored by Fulton County Health Center), Fall Family Fun Nights on October 20 and 21 (pre-registration required), Explore the Crafts on October 28 and the annual Woodcarvers Show & Sale on Oct. 28 and 29.
Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and each Sunday afternoon from noon to 4 p.m. The Historic Village is closed on Mondays, except holidays. Admission is $17 for adults and $11 for students ages 6-16. Children 5 and under are always free with family and Sauder Village members receive free admission to the Historic Village for an entire year. Senior, Military and AAA discounts are also available. Again this year, children 16 and under are free every Sunday this season.
