Nidec adds turning mill

MINSTER — A new, large-capacity turning mill was recently commissioned by the Nidec Minster Corp., allowing the company to produce large, precision-machined components more efficiently and with less outsourcing.

Corporate officials from Nidec Minster’s parent company, Nidec-Shimpo, were on hand recently for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of the $3.4 million project.

“This represents a major investment in our employees and our capabilities here at Minster,” Nidec Minster President and COO Steve Gruber said. “The new machine will allow us to produce parts in-house that we previously had to purchase from outside vendors.”

Acquired from WFL Millturn Technologies in Linz, Austria, the M80 Millturn model installed at Nidec Minster is one of the largest machines of its kind in the region.

Utilizing state-of-the-art programming and control software, Nidec Minster officials expect the WFL Millturn to improve efficiencies by 20 percent, and improve the delivery time of machined parts to the Nidec Minster assembly floor by up to 30 percent.

“The cost savings and reduced lead times will help to make us more competitive in what is becoming a very cost-competitive global environment,” Gruber said.

The WFL Millturn is the latest in a series of major infrastructure investments at Nidec Minster. Last year the company unveiled its $1 million Employee Education Center, and in 2014, production began on a high speed Okuma Bridge Mill at a project cost of $4 million.

“Investing in new technology and continuous improvement is vital in allowing the Nidec Minster Corp. to offer industry-leading, material-forming machinery and services that are second to none in the world,” Gruber added.

Headquartered in Minster, the Nidec Minster Corp. has more than 700 employees around the world. Nidec Minster operates service and production facilities in Logrono, Spain; Ningbo, China; Halblech, Germany; and Queretaro, Mexico; along with sales offices in Japan, Belgium, Mexico, Spain, China, India, Germany and Brazil.

Nidec Minster is a subsidiary of the Nidec Corp., headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. The Nidec Group includes more than 180 worldwide companies, 110,000 employees, and annual sales of approximately $9 billion.
