Western Ohio Cut Stone celebrates silver anniversary

SIDNEY — Western Ohio Cut Stone is entering its 25th year of operation as a producer of architectural grade natural stone products. The company has operations in Seneca County, Shelby County and Miami County in Ohio. The company also represents and sells natural stone products and natural thin veneer products of other producers from the warehouse and yard in Sidney. Western Ohio Cut Stone serves markets throughout the Midwest, East Coast and Mid Atlantic.

“2019 saw steady demand on par with previous years’ orders with commercial, public and residential markets all remaining strong,” said President Brad Kinner. “This was hindered somewhat by unusually wet weather during the Spring of the year keeping contractors from continuing outdoor masonry and landscape installations through the Spring and early summer months. Overall, sales of our traditional building stone products continued to be robust. Demand stayed strong in our Eastern Pennsylvania, Mid-Atlantic and Dayton markets.”

His report continues:

Specialty cut stone products sales continued to be strong in 2018 as well. Homes and buildings across Ohio utilized these products to add beauty and a lasting legacy to these structures. We provided thin stone veneer stone for the recently completed Bob Sargeant & Family Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in Shelby County. We are proud to have this high visibility example of our products in our own back yard.

Local sales at our yard at 1542 Riverside Drive (state Route 47), east of Sidney were steady in 2019. We continue to offer a full line of crushed stone, sand and gravel, and a clean hardfill dumpsite. We also carry a full line of natural stone landscape, and building stone products. We have added additional lines of decorative aggregate mulch substitute products that remain very popular.

As we look to 2020, we remain optimistic about our prospects as we have good carryover volume coming into the new year. Residential construction in the United States, which is a big driver for our products, looks to be strong into 2020 as interest rates continue to be attractive for homebuyers, a positive sign for homeowners, builders and remodelers. Our focus will be on planning and workforce retention and development as these are our greatest challenges to continued growth going forward.

The company was founded in 1995. They have locations in Ludlow Falls, Sidney, Bloomville and Flat Rock. Key staff members are Tom Milligan, co-owner; myself, co-owner; and Janet Mullen, controller.
