Innovation contest for employers

COLUMBUS — Forward thinking Ohio employers are invited to enter the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) annual Safety Innovations Competition.

The competition recognizes innovations that have reduced safety, ergonomic and occupational health risks for employees. Public and private employers may apply online at bwc.ohio.gov by Sept. 30. The top five entries will compete for cash prizes at the 2016 Safety Congress & Expo next March.

“Employers themselves are often the most inventive in coming up with solutions to workplace hazards, because they know their workplaces better than anyone else,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Steve Buehrer. “Ohioans have always been pioneering and these awards celebrate Ohio employers who bring that creativity and resourcefulness into their workplaces in order to protect their workers.”

The competition features cash prizes from $1,000 to $6,000. A panel of independent judges will evaluate and score the innovations based on a number of criteria, including risk reduction, innovation, return on investment, potential for the innovation to be utilized by other employers, and presentation quality. Conference attendees will determine the recipient of the The People’s Choice award.

BWC safety experts will visit each semi-finalist’s location and the top five companies will attend Safety Congress & Expo, March 9 to 11, in Columbus to present their innovation to a three-judge panel and the public. Awards will be presented during a ceremony on March 10.
