Sheriff’s Office investigates inmate’s death

SIDNEY — The investigation into the death of an inmate at the Shelby County Jail is underway.

According to a press release from Shelby County Sheriff John R. Lenhart, Jacob Martin Lewis, 28, of Sidney, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 15, in his cell.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., said the release, Lewis was found not breathing in his cell. Sheriff’s Office staff immediately started life saving measures and Sidney Rescue was dispatched to the scene. Lewis was pronounced dead by Sidney Rescue and Shelby County Coroner Dr. David McDonald was called to the scene.

Lewis was booked into the jail on Jan. 30 on one count of trafficking in a counterfeit controlled substance, a fifth-degree felony.

No further details about the death was available.
