Water Street fire intentionally set

SIDNEY — A juvenile has been taken into custody in connection with a suspicious fire on Water Street.

According to a Sidney Fire Department press release, the combined efforts of the Sidney Police and Sidney Fire Departments led investigators to determine the fire at 201 W. Water St. on Aug. 28 was an intential act. Currently, one juvenile is in custody. The fire remains under investigation while the police and fire departments continue to follow up on information obtained.

Firefighters were dispatched to the residence after receiving a 911 call that black smoke was coming from the building’s second floor. The fire was reported by alert neighbors in the area.

On arrival, firefighters investigated the building and found a working fire in a second floor apartment. The building is a five unit apartment building that was ordered vacant by the Sidney-Shelby County Health Department and not occupied at the time of the fire.

Firefighting efforts quickly controlled and extinguished the fire. A thorough search of the building was completed by firefighters and there were no victims located. No injuries were reported by firefighters.

A box alarm was dispatched to recall all off-duty personnel, Anna Fire Department and Lockington Fire Department for mutual aid.

DP&L had secured electrical power to the building at an earlier unknown time. DP&L did respond to the scene. At the time of the fire the building did not have natural gas service in use.

The structure sustained light fire damage. Loss to the structure is estimated at $5,000 and loss to the contents is estimated at zero dollars.
