SIDNEY — Four people were taken into custody following the pursuit of a vehicle after two alleged burglaries in Sidney on Saturday, Sept. 30, shortly after 3 a.m.

According to a press release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Rikki E. Nooks, 20, of Dayton, along with three juveniles were taken into custody. Nooks is incarcerated in the Shelby County Jail. The three male juveniles are being held at the West Central Juvenile Detention Center in Troy.

The Sidney Police Department reports that Officer Scott White attempted to stop a gray Pontiac Grand Prix that was traveling at a high rate of speed and operating with no headlights on Russell Road near State Route 29 Saturday at approximately 3:14 a.m. During this encounter the vehicle slowed briefly in the area of the Auto Spa (1612 St. Marys Ave.) at which point one of the doors to the vehicle was observed to open briefly as if somebody may have exited the vehicle or dumped property. The vehicle then fled northbound on state Route 29 at a speed in excess of 90 mph. Due to the distance between White and the fleeing vehicle the pursuit was terminated. The vehicle’s direction of travel was relayed to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to assist Sidney Police in pursuit of the vehicle. A deputy observed the suspect’s vehicle continuing to flee northbound on state Route 29. The vehicle then continued to flee westbound on state Route 705.

The driver lost control of the vehicle at state Route 705 and Patterson Halpin Road and crashed in a field. The occupants fled the vehicle and ran into a corn field. After a search of the area, all four occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Fort Loramie Rescue treated the suspect for their injuries from the crash.

The final suspect was taken into custody with the assistance of an Ohio CCW holder. He held the last subject at gunpoint until deputies arrived at the CCW holder’s grandmother’s house. The suspect had stopped at the residence and asked if he could use her telephone to call for a ride so he could flee the area.

While the deputies were taking the suspects into custody, Sidney officers conducted a search in the area of the car wash. Officers discovered a cell phone that appeared to have been taken from a store display. Believing that the phone was likely stolen property officers responded to Sidney’s local phone retailers.

After doing so broken glass to the front doors were discovered at two locations, the Verizon Store located at 2262 Michigan St. and the AT&T Store located at 2489 Michigan St. Upon further investigation it was learn that both of these businesses had been recently burglarized.

Videotape at the Verizon Store showed three suspects inside the business committing theft acts. As a result an investigative response by the Sidney Police Department was initiated this included a detective and evidence technician. Over the course of the next several hours the four occupants of the fleeing silver Pontiac were located at various locations throughout Shelby County by the Shelby County Sherriff’s Office. As the occupants were located they were turned over to the Sidney Police Department for follow-up investigation.

As a result of a combined effort from the Sidney Police Department’s patrol and investigation divisions and the efforts of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office four individuals were charged with two counts of breaking in entering felonies of the 5th degree. All four suspects were from Dayton Ohio.

The incident is still under investigation and other charges could result.
