PIQUA — The employment of staff, plus the resignation of another, was approved during Tuesday’s Upper Valley Career Center Board of Education.
Terry McMenamin was hired as the adult student, alumni and assessment coordinator effective Dec. 28, 2015, through June 30, 2016. The $54,000 salary will be prorated for the length of the contract.
The board also approved contracts for DeJanae Lawrence, adult assessment center monitor, and Daniel Stuart, adult LPN, STNA instructor. Lawrence’s contract is from Dec. 9, 2015 to June 30, 2016. She will be paid $15 per hour. Stuart’s contract is from Dec. 9, 2015, to June 30, 2016, and he will be paid $25 per hour.
A supplemental contract was given to newly-hired treasurer Anthony Fraley for a transition period into the job. He will be paid for 40 hours between Nov. 24 and Dec. 31, 2015.
The board accepted the retirement resignation of Cynthia Graham, who is the special education instructor in the student assistance center. The resignation is effective May 31, 2016.
The resignations of Jason Bennett, adult ED industrial instructor, and Janet Stewart, cafeteria worker, were approved. Bennett’s resignation was effective Nov. 23, while Stewart’s resignation is effective Dec. 24.
The board modified the salary of Jessica Helsinger, career tech instructor, effective Jan. 1, 2016. Her salary was amended from $48,800 to $54,162.
Two policy revisions were read for the first time during the meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Nancy Luce reviewed the two revisions which deal with school bus safety program and drug testing for district personnel.
The drug testing deals employees who are required to hold a commercial driver’s license. The revision clarifies that both federal and state laws are to be followed.
The revision with the school bus safety program states that someone other than a driver is to supervise evacuation drills and that the drills must be held annually.
In other business, the board:
• Learned the holiday reception will be held Monday, Dec. 21, at 2:45 p.m. in the Stickley dining commons. Board members were encouraged to attend.
• Learned the Explore Careers Day and Open House went well. At the open house, 296 students completed applications for 2016. The current number of applications is 408, which is more than 100 more than in 2014.
• Noted that the meeting was Paul Carpenter’s final meeting as treasurer. Luce thanked him for his service to the district.
• Approved the fiscal year 2016 alternate budget resolution.
• Approved the purchase order for $42,656 for the purchase of a multi-purpose vehicle from Cardinal Bus Sales.
• Approved the purchase order for $20,941 for a brush chipper, domestic value package and centrifugal clutch from Verneer Heartland Inc.
• Approved the 2016 board meeting dates.
• Approved Dr. Robert Allen as president pro-tem to preside over the January 2016 organizational meeting.
• Approved membership in the Ohio School Board Association and the Ohio School Board Legal Assistance Fund.
• Approved Haleigh Sano, cosmetology student, to attend the SkillsUSA Regional Office Training in Leesburg, Virginia, Jan. 17-22, 2016. She will be accompanied by her instructor, Sara Plozay. Sano’s travel costs will not exceed $425. Plozay’s costs will be covered by SkillsUSA.
• Approved various donations from individuals and companies.
The board’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. in the Adams Board Room in the main instructional building.
