Booher wins Hardin-Houston 2015 Spelling Bee

HOUSTON— On Thursday, Dec. 3, the Hardin-Houston Spelling Bee was held in the Commons.

Students in grades four through eight participated. Fifth Grade Social Studies Teacher Mr. Brent New, pronounced the words for the spelling bee. Fifth/Sixth Grade Science Teacher Mrs. Katy Koverman and Fifth Grade Language Arts Teacher Mrs. Julie Kies helped judge the event. Mrs. Carrie Larger was the spelling bee coordinator for Hardin-Houston Elementary, and Mrs. Kim Vestal was the coordinator for Houston Junior High School.

The winner of the Spelling Bee was seventh grade student Mariah Booher, the daughter of Gayette and Scott Booher. The first runner-up was fifth grade student Grace Koenig, the daughter of Mike and Amanda Koenig. The second runner-up was seventh grade student Maddy Wills, the daughter of Brenda and Matt Wills.

The bee lasted 13 rounds. Mariah won by correctly the word “emergence” and spelling the word “divisive” correctly. The school is proud of all the participants and want to wish Mariah well as she moves on to represent the school in Lima for the regional competition in March.
