Lehman plans three-day homecoming

SIDNEY — Lehman Catholic High School will celebrate homecoming, Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 11-13.

Festivities commence Thursday at 8:15 p.m. at Lehman Catholic High School with a traditional bonfire and pep rally.

On Friday, the homecoming parade will begin at 6:15 p.m. in Sidney Memorial Stadium. The parade will feature each class at Lehman Catholic, Principal/CEO Denise Stauffer, homecoming grand marshal Leah Bertke and the homecoming king and queen candidates.

This year’s grand marshal was selected by the senior class. Bertke has been teaching at Lehman since 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and a Master of Education, both from the University of Notre Dame, and a Master of Education in chemistry teaching from Loyola University Chicago. Before coming to Lehman, she taught for three years at St. John the Evangelist High School in Plaquemine, Louisiana, and for seven years at Gordon Tech Catholic High School in Chicago, Illinois. Bertke teaches chemistry, integrated science, advanced placement biology and food science. She is also the moderator of the Interact Club and Pro-Life Guards and assists as a coach of the Science Olympiad Team. Bertke also coordinates the Senior Kairos Retreat and has organized the summer mission trips and the 2019 trip to Europe.

Each member of the homecoming court will be introduced during pregame ceremonies followed by crowning of the queen and king. This year’s queen candidates are Jacquie Schemmel, daughter of Bill and Alicia Schemmel, of New Bremen; Shannon Staley, daughter of Joe and Kim Staley, and Grace Monnin, daughter of Andy and Julie Monnin, all of Piqua; Claire Larger, daughter of Jeff Larger and Heather Larger, of Fort Loramie; and Lauren Riley, daughter of David and Jackie Riley, Samantha Edwards, daughter of John and Heather Edwards, and Grace Olding, daughter of Bryan and Sara Olding, all of Sidney.

The king candidates are Elliott Gilardi, son of Marc and Colleen Gilardi, of Troy; Ethan Knapke, son of Jeremy and Cori Knapke, of Piqua; and Michael Denning, son of Rick and Gail Denning, Elias Bezy, son of Paul and Bree Bezy, Mitchell Sollmann, son of Jeramie and Kara Sollmann, Bradly Haynes, son of Jacqueline Fergus, and Alex Gleason, son of Tim and Amy Gleason, all of Sidney.

After the parade, the alumni band will join the student band for pregame followed by the National Anthem performed by the Lehman Catholic Limelighters and Gold Standard A Cappella Groups. The football game between against Upper Scioto Valley High School will begin at 7 p.m.

There will be a halftime salute to the coaches and players who were part of the volleyball state runner-up and championship teams of 1993, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2010.

The weekend concludes at the Disney-themed homecoming dance, Saturday, at 8:30 p.m., at the school.
