PIQUA — On Tuesday, Feb. 9, Jackson Center FFA members competed at Upper Valley Career Center as a part of the sub-district contest.

The FFA Public Speaking Contest is designed to help develop agricultural leadership by providing FFA members the opportunity to participate in Agricultural Public Speaking activities. There are four public speaking areas: Creed, Beginning Prepared, Extemporaneous and Prepared.

Freshman Maddie Yarkosky competed in the Creed portion of the contest. In order to compete, Maddie had to memorize and recite all five paragraphs of the FFA Creed as well as answer questions pertaining specifically to the creed.

Junior, Christen Ware competed in the Prepared portion of the contest. Christen had to research and write a 6 to 8 minute speech on an agricultural topic of her choice and recite it from memory. Her speech titled, ”Debunking the myths of GMO’s”, was about Genetically Modified Organisms and the controversies surrounding their use.

Maddie placed third in her division, and Christen placed first. From there, Christen went on to compete at the district contest on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at West Milton High School. Christen placed third in the district.
