Students at Anna Elementary practice food science competition

ANNA — The Anna FFA officer team went to the Anna Elementary School recently to teach the students about the vast agriculture industry, including the science of food.

FFA members walked students through an FFA food science and technology contest. They participated in many activities that are very similar to a real competition. These activities included sensory evaluations such as triangle tests and aroma tests. The triangle test is a test to identify which product is the different of the three.

For the aroma test, students were given four different aromas which included almond, vanilla, peppermint, and lemon and had to identify each aroma.

The students also had to create a food label for a fruit smoothie and identify food safety and sanitation problems. They were shown pictures of food processing facilities and they had to identify what was hazardous or unsanitary about each picture.
