PIQUA — Upper Valley Career Center honored student achievement in an evening program, Thursday, May 5. Student Services Director Matt Meyer welcomed the honorees and their families. Awards were presented by Meyer, Superintendent Nancy Luce, PhD, and program supervisors Eric Bowser; Michelle Brunson; Joe Davis; Timothy Cordonnier and Roger Voisard.
Seventy-one juniors and seniors have perfect attendance for the first three grading periods this year. Fifty-seven of these students also earned 3.25 or better grade point average. Additionally fourteen seniors had perfect attendance their junior year and during the first three grading periods this year. All were recognized on stage in the Hartzell Lecture Hall.
A total of 149 students were awarded the Upper Valley Career Center Honor Pin for their 3.5 or better grade point average and 98 percent or higher attendance during the first three grading periods this year.
Fourteen seniors earned all A’s in each of their Upper Valley Career Center academic classes each grading period for the 2014-2015 year and the first three grading periods for the 2015-2016 school year. The honorees are: Shelby Bohman, Justin Eilerman, Dale Garber, Kristopher Gibboney, Sophia Gilson, Hailey Gross, Lindsey Haines, Travis Hilgefort, Tyler Hutton, Haeley Kittel, Madeline Ponchillia, Matthew Schipper, Paige Shonk and Lindsey Ward.
Fifty-two juniors and seniors were honored for earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the first three grading periods of the 2015-2016 school year.
Special awards and scholarships were announced next: Dale Garber, HVAC/R, was selected by the Ohio Department of Education as a semi-finalist for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program CTE category.
The H. Scott Garbry Memorial Scholarship was awarded to the following Environmental Occupations seniors: Aaron Anderson, Austin Brown, Blaine Carey, Gage Fitzgerald, Kierstin Haney, Jameson Wallis. The McColloch-Baker Scholarship was awarded to Dillon Underwood, Ag and Power Technologies. The Jon H. Poteat Scholarship was awarded to Sophia Gilson, Electronic Applications. The American Legion awarded the Ernest Johns Memorial Award to Logan Jones, Automotive Technologies. The Matt D. Zimpfer Memorial Award was presented to Matthew Schipper, Welding Technologies. The Cecil E. Phillis Memorial Award was presented to Ben Taylor, Automotive Technologies. The U.S. Army Reserve Scholarship Athlete Award was presented to Brandon Mack, Pre-Engineering and Design Technologies and Julie May, Interactive Media.
Students earning the President’s Award for Education Excellence are Austin Adams, Kristopher Gibboney, Brandon Mack, Aaron Plas. The Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award was presented by Scott Family McDonald’s Restaurants to Gabrielle Centliver. The Amber Detrick Memorial Early Childhood Scholarship went to Haeley Kittel. The Sharon Weyant Memorial Scholarship was presented to Cailin Litten, Early Childhood Education and Care.
A unique Achievers Program recognition is the announcement of the Executive Director’s Award. In Executive Director Jason Haak’s absence, the award was presented by Dr. Nancy Luce to Nathan Hampton, Horticulture and Landscape Management, Piqua, saluting his ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success.
