RUSSIA — The All-American Soap Box Derby Mini-Car preliminaries were held at Russia Local School as a STEM Challenge to the fifth grade science class. The event was held to promote the STEM initiative to help increase students’ interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Each fifth grade student designed and assembled their Mini-Soap Box Derby car in hopes of building the fastest car. Of the 29 cars in the competition Russia students Aubrey Stickel came in first place, Cece Borchers came in second place, and Makena Hoying came in third place.

Next, the fifth grade students will journey to the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, to participate in the 2016 Gravity Racing Challenge STEM Team Competition on May 14 where three teams will compete in the Stock Division.

Students are feverishly preparing the three full size Soap Box Derby cars the school acquired over the past four years of racing at the STEM event.

The Derby’s Gravity Racing Challenge STEM Team Competition began in 2010 when two Soap Box Derby cars were placed into the National Inventors Hall of Fame School in Akron. Twelve students built the cars and then competed in a race down the world famous Derby Downs Track. The event in Akron has grown to include more than 1,200 students and educators.

Along with the Racing Challenge Competition students will additionally participate in various Gravity Racing STEM Competitions. Photography, poster design, mini-soap box racing, and press release competition are just a few.

The sponsors who made the competition possible include Dale Goubeaux Excavating, Keith’s Truck and Trailer, Bensman Welding, Jeremy Monnin, and Marcus Petitjean.
