SIDNEY — Six Lehman Catholic High School students participated in this year’s State Science Day held recently at The Ohio State University. The 68th annual event involved over 1,200 science research projects exhibited by students in grades 7-12 from schools across the state.

Three of the six Lehman students received the top rating of superior. Junior Megan Neumeier was the top winner for Lehman with her project in the Medicine and Health category, “The Effects of Lactase Supplements on Lactose.” Neumeier was awarded second place in the category and received $300 from the Nestle Corporation. She is the daughter of Sam and Mary Neumeier of Troy.

Senior Caroline Heitmeyer received a superior for her project in the area of Chemistry and Honorable Mention with a $150 award from Ohio Nutrition Council. The project was titled “Which Oil has the Greatest Saturated Fat Content?” Heitmeyer is the daughter of Dan and Jill Heitmeyer of Sidney.

Freshman Jacquie Schemmel received a superior for her Environmental project titled “How does Light Affect the Bioluminescences of Pyrocystis Fusiformis?” Schemmel is the daughter of Bill and Alicia Schemmel of New Bremen.

Receiving excellent ratings were freshman Alex Gleason for his Environmental project titled “The Diamagnetism of Soluted Water,” sophomore Meaghan McDonald for her Behavioral project titled “High Frequencies,” and freshman Brieanna Werling for her Behavioral project titled “Shaping Your Thoughts.” Gleason is the son of Tim and Amy Gleason of Sidney. McDonald is the daughter of David and Melissa McDonald, also of Sidney, and Werling is the daughter of David and Patricia Werling of Piqua.

State Science Day is sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Science and is the academic equivalent of a state athletic championship. Over 35,000 students do science fair projects each year. Students must qualify for State by receiving superior ratings at their own school fairs and at their District events. Throughout the competition, they are evaluated on their scientific research and communication skills.

Lehman science teachers require participation in science fair for most of their classes. Teachers of the students representing Lehman at the State Science Fair were Tracy Hall and Science Department Chair Sister Ginny Scherer.
