Sidney BOE prepares for 2016-17 school year

SIDNEY — With the beginning of summer, the Sidney City Schools Board of Education turned its attention to the start of the 2016-17 school year during Monday night’s meeting.

The board awarded four one-year contracts to new staff members. Their contracts are effective Aug. 16.

Hired were:

• Michelle Angell, elementary school intervention specialist, $54,345 per year;

• Katherine Bourelle, school counselor, $39,756 per year;

• Alison Brousseua, Sidney High School English teacher, $37,932 per year; and,

• Megan Hayzlett, Sidney Middle School math teacher, $36,473 per year.

Francine Dembski, principal at Longfellow Elementary School, was awarded a new three-year, 215-day contract. Her contract for the 2016-17 school year will be $90,395.

The board approved a revised contract length for Annette Lochard, SHS secretary, from 225 days to 250 days effective July 1.

The board accepted the resignation due to retirement of Craig Hopkins, maintenance, effective June 30.

The board also accepted the resignations of Laura Homan, SMS math teacher, effective May 26; Julie Metzler, elementary school teacher, effective July 31; Andy Slaughter, SHS social studies teacher, effective June 20; and Angie Slaughter, elementary aide, effective June 20.

Superintendent John Scheu asked the board to hold a special meeting Monday, June 27, at 7 a.m. for the employment of personnel, which will include the hiring of an assistant principal for Sidney Middle School, and also to approve the 2016-17 contract with the Sidney-Shelby County Board of Health to provide school health services including services for certain medically handicapped students, clinic services, screening services, and kindergarten assessment for the period of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. Also on the agenda will be an item to amend IDEA-Part B and Title I appropriations.

Ken McElroy, chairman of the permanent improvement levy committee, reported the “work starts next week” on the campaign. The committees have been set and materials have arrived.

“We’re going to start hitting it hard around the Fourth of July,” said McElroy.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the program services agreement with the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center for fiscal year 2017.

• Approved the transfer of the balance of the general fund cost center, textbook and instructional material set aside and general fund cost center, capital improvement set aside to the general fund cost center at the close of fiscal year 2016.

• Approved the transfer of the balance of the OHSAA tournament fund to the stadium facilities fund at the close of FY16.

• Approved temporary appropriations for FY17 in the amount of 25 percent of FY16 appropriations.

• Approved amended appropriations: in the general fund, purchase services, $350,000, supplies, $25,000 and capital outlay, $250,000; public school support fund, $20,000; district agency fund, $10,000; IDEA, Part B, $15,000; and Title I, $15,000.

• Approved donations for baseball field renovations, Baseball Boosters, $12,000, 200 Club, $2,000 and Sidney Athletic Boosters, $2,000; and for the purchase of new volleyball poles, 200 Club, $2,000, and Sidney Athletic Boosters, $1,000.

• Approved a motion to accept the low bids through the Educational Purchasing Cooperative and award contracts to Nickles Bakery, Reiter Dairy and Gordon Food Service. Board member Mandi Croft abstained as her husband is employed by Nickles Bakery.

• Approved school lunch and breakfast prices, which remain the same as last year. Lunch for grades K-5 will be $2.35, breakfast, $1, and extra milk, 50 cents; for grades 6-12, $2.60 for lunch, $1.50 for breakfast, and 50 cents for extra milk.

• Employed Cassie Davis as a substitute aide at $11.01 per hour.

• Employed Jane Hixon as a home instruction tutor at $25.35 per hour on an as needed basis.

• Awarded supplemental contracts for extended service contracts to Anita Barton, SHS counselor, 10 days, $3,876; Katherine Bourelle, SHS counselor, 10 days, $2,149; Erin Montgomery, SHS counselor, 10 days, $3,253; Linda Carpenter, SHS marketing education, 10 days, $3,490; and Tammy Johnson, SHS library aide, seven days, $704.

• Awarded supplemental contracts for summer school/OAA reading, Kay Straman, teacher, $26 per hour; and Judith Shepherd, aide, $11.79 per hour.

• Awarded supplemental contracts for academics, Lisa Beigel, classified substitute clerk, $755; Brett Bickel, academia adviser, $3,100; Greg Snyder, academia assistant, $1,904; Allex Davis, SHS yearbook staff adviser, $2,918; Chris Adams, band director, $8,425; Todd Bridges, assistant band director, $2,188; Christian Taylor, Key Club adviser, $1,094; Joe Spangler, senior class adviser, $1,094; Kathy Inman, senior class advisor, 50 percent, $547; Annette Lochard, senior class adviser, 50 percent, $547; Kelly Walker, junior class adviser, $1,459; Allison Zimmerman, sophomore class adviser, $1,094; Stacey Goffena, freshman class adviser, 50 percent, $547; Sara Olding, freshman class adviser, 50 percent, $957; Brett Bickel, mock trial adviser, $1,915; Austin Young, musical director, $2,918; Kelly Thorne, National Honor Society, $1,915; Chris Adams, pep band, $2,735; Travis Weldy, Sidney Alternative School head teacher, $547; Brett Bickel, student government adviser, $4,596; Leslie Phlipot, SMS student council, 50 percent, $729; Nish Golden, SMS student council, 50 percent, $1,723; Shawn Dunlap, SMS yearbook adviser, 50 percent, $547; Emily Hibbitts, SMS yearbook adviser, $547.

• Awarded supplemental contracts for T-School monitors at SHS at $26 per hour, Sharon Maurice, Kelly Thorne, Stacey Goffena, Michell Wroda, Mary Ellen Buechter, Maggi Williams, Adam Doenges and Sara Olding; monitors at SMS at $26 per hour, Heather Davidson, Nish Golden, Wade New and Frank Hall; monitors at SAS at $26 per hour, Tracis Weldy, Lisa Meiners and Frank Guillozet; and aide monitors at SMS at $12.23 per hour, Renee Davis and Richard Engelken.

• Approved Alfonso Macias as a graduate with the Class of 2016.

• Adopted the 2016-17 Title I parent involvement policies for Whittier, Northwood, Emerson and Longfellow schools.

• Adopted the elementary, SMS, SHS and SAS student handbooks for the 2016-17 school year.

The board’s next regular meeting will be Monday, July 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the board of education building.
