SIDNEY — During an early morning meeting Monday, the Sidney City Schools Board of Education said goodbye and hello to an assistant principal for Sidney Middle School.

The board accepted the resignation of Michael Epperly, SMS assistant principal, effective June 24. Epperly has a new job with SST6 (State Support Team 6), based in Wapakoneta. SST6 is the curriculum arm of Ohio’s State Department of Education.

After accepting the resignation, the board then hired Chris Barr as the school’s new principal effective Aug. 1. Barr received a two-year, 215-day contract at $77,482. He is currently the assistant principal at Graham Local Schools. He had previously been employed as principal at Bennett Intermediate School in the Piqua Local Schools District.

He received his principal’s license from the University of Dayton, his master’s degree from Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Francis, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

“We feel fortunate to have a person of his caliber step into the position at the middle school,” said Superintendent John Scheu.

The board also employed Joanne Mathews as SMS intervention specialist (IS) effective Aug. 16. She will be paid $67,475 per year. She has spent the last 13 years at Meadowdale High School in Dayton.

The board also hired Sherry Guinther as a substitute teacher clerk at $6,626 per year.

The resignations of four other teachers were also approved. Michael Galloway, SMS IS, resignation is contingent upon his hiring by Huber Heights Schools on July 14. Scheu said Galloway lives in Dayton and was looking for a teaching job closer to his residence.

The board also accepted the resignation of Bryan Gray, SMS math/science teacher contingent upon his hiring by Troy Schools on July 11. Gray lives in Troy and was also seeking a position closer to home.

The resignation of Dan Lewis, Sidney High School IS, is also contingent upon his hiring by Twin Valley Community Schools on June 27. He was looking for an administrator’s position.

Jodi Danzig, of Anna, resigned her position as a second-grade teacher at Northwood Elementary School effective July 31. She has been hired by Anna Local Schools.

The board also approved amended appropriations for IDEA-Part B and Title I, both in the amount of $30,000 each. Treasurer Mike Watkins told the board that he forgot to include the last payroll of the year in the amended appropriations the board had approved at its June 20 meeting.

An agreement with the Sidney-Shelby County Board of Health at a rate of $37 per hour was approved. The services will include those for certain medically handicapped students, clinic services, screening services and kindergarten assessment. The contract is for July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. The rates, said Watkins, as the same as they were for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

The board’s next meeting will be Monday, July 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the board of education office.
