Russia BOE approves appropriations, more at recent meeting

RUSSIA — At the September meeting of the Russia Board of Education last week the board moved to approve appropriations for the 2017 fiscal year totaling $6,402,822.27.

In addition the board accepted a donation of $7,500 from the Tom and Corrine Francis Family for scholarship purposes.

They also passed a motion to approve the advertisement of bids to replace the windows in the 1937 portion of the building as well as portions of the 1957 building during the summer of 2017.

Superintendent Steven Rose updated the board on the status of current enrollment. Enrollment is declining due to larger classes graduating than are currently enrolling.

The board hired staff members, including a list of substitute teachers at a rate of $85 per day on an as-needed basis. They employed Eric Sullenberger as Junior High Science Olympiad Coach at an annual rate of $1,143 for the 2016-17 school year.

A motion passed to employ the following staff members as after school tutors at a rate of $22 per hour on an as-needed basis for the 2016-17 school year: Mary Dapore, Andrea Raterman, Jill Schwieterman, Lori Lawrence, Katie Rethman, Angie Monnin, Kris Poeppelman, Holly Cotner, Michele Huber, Jenni Peyton, Mike Hart, Janel Slonkosky, Michelle Muhlenkamp, Jenn Wysocki and Kathy Bevans.

They also employed the following classified staff as after school tutors at a rate of $12.81 per hour on an as-needed basis for the 2016-17 school year: Sara Neargarder, Denise Hiatt, Connie Gariety, Sheila Magoto, and Cindy Goubeaux.

The board approved Keith Bohman, Michael Bohman, Dan Lachat, and Robert Osborne as volunteer bowling coaches.

They hired Kevin Phlipot as the varsity boys baseball coach, Aaron Monnin as an assistant varsity baseball coach, Denny Monnin as the JV boys baseball coach, and Jamie Herron as an assistant JV/varsity softball coach.
