Anna FFA addresses healthy eating, food insecurity

ANNA — Recently, Anna FFA members addressed elementary students in the school district to deliver a message regarding food insecurity and healthy eating.

Of the approximately 50,000 people living in Shelby County, over 6,000 people- about 13 percent- are food insecure. Many are struggling to provide their families healthy food choices.

Anna FFA members saw an opportunity to help the local community by bagging healthy snacks for each elementary student to take home for the weekend. In all 530 bags containing 2,530 pieces of fruit were sent home with students in grades K-5. Members of the chapter bagged the fruit and delivered it to Elementary students at the end of the school day, along with a message about food insecurity and healthy eating.

Information cards were placed on the inside of every bag that contained nutrition facts and storing information.

Students were encouraged, as they were able, to support local efforts to assist those in need of healthy foods not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year. Contact information for local food pantries was also provided for those in need or wishing to donate.

The Anna FFA Chapter is a youth organization of about 150 members. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. The Anna FFA is a chartered member of the National FFA Organization.
