SIDNEY – Doug Zimmer was hired as the Sidney High School principal Monday with one dissenting vote. He will replace Jon Geuy as principal, who is retiring.

Currently, Zimmer serves as assistant principal at the high school. Zimmer assumes the new post on Aug. 1. The three-year contract has an initial annual base salary of $105,577.

Board member Robert Smith cast the lone no vote during the roll call. It was revealed during the meeting that an eight-person committee interviewed the top four candidates, including Smith. There was no comment regarding the vote during the meeting.

After the meeting, Smith said, “I just felt there was a better candidate.” When pressed further as to who the ‘better candidate’ was, Smith said uncommitted, “I think there was a better candidate. I hope he proves me wrong.”

Zimmer became assistant principal in 2013. He has earned bachelors and master’s degrees from the University of Dayton. He was team captain of the university’s football team, and is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame.
