3 to join Fairlawn Hall of Honor

SIDNEY — Two alumni and one community member will be joining the Fairlawn Hall of Honor on June 3. The Hall of Honor includes Fairlawn Local School, Green Township School and Perry Township School.

William “Rusty” Cottrel, Class of 1967, Kimberly (Kessler) Metz, Class of 1981, and Sue Gump, school and community, will be inducted into the Hall of Honor on Saturday, June 3, at Fairlawn Local Schools, 18800 Johnston Road.

Cottrel, a 1971 graduate of Ohio State University and 1983 graduate of the Navy War College, is a U.S. Navy veteran, having served his country from 1971 to 1993. He retired as a commandeer in 1993. He was named Flight Instructor of the Year in 1979.

During his Naval career, Cottrel was a flight instructor, carrier landing instructor, maintenance department head, senior standardization instructor for the Atlantic Fleet. He also has 100 carrier landings in his career.

He was the most valuable player of the Ohio State Rifle and Pistol Team in 1971, and was a member of the U.S. Navy Rifle and Pistol Team in 1991. He was a named a Kentucky Colonel in 2005 and Enon Citizen of the Year in 2005.

He was a senior Naval science instructor at Belmont High School, Dayton Public Schools, for 16 years until his retirement from teaching in 2009. April 20, 2009, was declared Rusty Cottrel Day in Clark County.

He and his wife, Pamela Frazier Cottrel, have been married for 45 years and have three children and six grandchildren.

Mets works and coaches volleyball and track at Jackson Center Local Schools. She is the head coach of Jackson Center’s back-to-back state volleyball championships in 2015 and 2016. She was named the District IX Volleyball Coaches Association of the Year 11 times. She received the Coaches Achievement Award three times. She is the president of the Ohio Volleyball Coaches Association.

Her volleyball teams have won the Shelby County Athletic League championship 14 times. they have been crowned Southwest District champions 15 times. they won four regional champion titles and was in the state final four in 2007. The team was the state runner-up in 2008.

She and her husband, Bruce Metz, have been married for 34 years and have two children and three grandchildren.

While not a graduate of Fairlawn Local Schools, Gump has been an active member of the school community. A 1965 graduate of Sidney High School, Gump has worked at Fairlawn for 36 years in various positions, including administrative assistant for three superintendents — Thomas Coyne, Steve Mascho and Jeff Hobbs.

She and her husband, Larry Gump, have been married for 49 years. They have two children, both Fairlawn graduates, and two grandchildren.

The theme of this year’s Hall of Honor ceremony is “Let’sGo to the Hop.” Special recognition is planned for graduates of 2017, 2012, 2007, 1997, 1992, 1987, 1982, 1977, 1972, 1967, 1962, 1957, 1952, 1947 and 1942.

In honor of the Fairlawn veterans who have served their county, the alumni association would like to sponsor a trip to Washington, D.C., for an individual. The contribution will benefit the Logan County Vets to DC program.

Registration on June 3 will be from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. A welcome and al ma mater will be given at 5:15 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by entertainment, Hall of Honor ceremony, class introduction and closing comments.
