Students win Bennett scholarships

SIDNEY — The Community Foundation of Shelby County has announced Betty Zorn Bennett Fund scholarship recipients.

Houston High School recipients are valedictorians Isaiah Beaver, of Houston, son of Matt and Becky Beaver; Kaitlyn Ellison, of Piqua, daughter of Jon and Kim Adams and Doug and Sarah Ellison; and Kyle Flaute, of Houston, son of Kirk A. Barhorst, and salutatorian Emma Mertz, of Houston, daughter of Louis and Tina Mertz. Beaver is studying civil engineering at the University of Dayton. Ellison attends Wright State University majoring in systems and industrial engineering. Flaute is studying game programming and simulation design at Edison State Community College. Mertz is a nursing major at Wright State University.

Sidney High School recipients are Sidney residents Katherine Robinson, daughter of Brian Robinson and Jamie Johnson-Robinson, and Erin Ivey, daughter of Jennifer and Teddy Ivey. Robinson attends Wittenberg University majoring in biochemistry. Ivey is majoring in biology at the Ohio State University.

Bennett’s estate provided for scholarship awards to each valedictorian and salutatorian at Houston and Sidney High schools. Each student received a $2,750 scholarship for his college education.
