BOE approves land purchase

SIDNEY — The purchase of land was approved during the Oct. 8 meeting of the Fairlawn Schools Board of Education.

The board agreed to purchase three property tracts owned by Rita Borland for future education needs for the district. The total purchase if $700,000 and includes 24.826 acres in one tract, 27.424 acres in the second tract and 31.937 acres in the third tract.

Appropriations for fiscal year 2016 were approved by the board. Total general fund appropriations is $5,677,716. which includes $2,970,000 in personal services (salaries) and $1,081,800 for fringe benefits. Total debt service is $365,000; special revenue funds, $620,461; and private purpose trust, $500. Total of all funds is $6,663,677.

Also approved by the board was the five-year forecast for the district.

“We do not have any concerns related to the five-year forecast or the FY2016 Appropriations,” said Superintendent Steve Mascho. “They are similar to past years. The district continues to be financially in the black. We expect our expenditures for the district to continue to be less than our income.”

The ending fund balance for the next five years is forecast at $5,448,524 for fiscal year 2016; $5,853,149 for FY2017; $5,805,189 for FY2018; $5,516,517 for FY2019; and $4,959,674 for FY2020.

The board also approved various contracts for the school year after holding an executive session.

Tyler Arvin and Kaitlyn Calwell were hired as substitute teachers for the year at $80 per pay. Matt Caldwell abstained from voting on the resolution.

Gavin Cathcart was awarded two one-year contracts for the intramural boys, grades one to four, and intramural girls, grades one to four. He will be paid $321 for the intramural boys contract. No pay was requested for the intramural girls contract.

John Batton was given a one-year contracts for the intramural girls, grade five. He will be paid $481.50. Jason Weigandt was given a one-year contracts for the intramural girls, grade six. He will be paid $481.50.

Dennis Davis was given a one-year contracts for the intramural boys, grade six. He will be paid $577.80.

The resignation of Dustin Black, junior varsity soccer coach was accepted. Fred Wells was awarded a contract to be the new JV soccer coach. He will be paid $1,284.

The board’s next meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 12, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 122 at the school.
