Praying for vocations

MARIA STEIN — In honor of the upcoming canonization by Pope Francis of Father Junipero Serra, an hour of prayer and fellowship is planned at the Maria Stein Shrine.

The pope will conduct the canonization during his visit to the United States.

The local Serra Club invites everyone to join it for an hour of prayer and fellowship at the Maria Stein Shrine on Thursday, Aug. 27. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. with veneration of the relic of Serra with prayer and petitions. The group then will move to the courtyard outside for a group prayer of the stations for vocations, led by Serra members. Refreshments will be served.

Serra, an 18th century Franciscan friar, left a comfortable life in Spain to come to the New World and share his love of the Gospel. He was so dedicated that he walked thousands of miles across what is now California and Mexico to spread the faith, establishing nine missions along the way. In this spirit, the Serra Club was formed to help continue his work for vocations.
