Praise God for the opportunity to enjoy his creation

Genesis 1:14-15 (MSG): “God spoke: ‘Lights! Come out! Shine in heaven’s sky! Separate day from night. Mark seasons and days and years. Lights in heaven’s sky to give light to earth.’ And there it was.”

Red, orange, yellow and brown — have you noticed all the colors surrounding us? The leaves have changed and many have already found their place amongst the curb to be taken away.

As I drive through town, I cannot help but notice the pumpkins and the beautiful displays of mums. My wife even has a huge mum hanging in the front yard along with a few harvest decorations.

We have enjoyed a beautiful display of God’s handiwork this fall, but fall reminds me that winter is just around the corner. So as I pull on my hoodie to enjoy this beautiful fall weather, I can sense that change is in the air.

I am one of those people who don’t like winter. I don’t understand why people want to play in the snow, ski in the snow, shovel the snow or do anything in the snow. It’s cold! And I don’t like cold. Maybe it’s the six years I lived in Mesa, Arizona, but I just love summer. I love the warmth and the sunlight.

My wife loves all the seasons. She is just as happy in the winter as she is in the spring, summer and fall. In fact fall is her very favorite season because she loves all the fall colors. She reminds me that change is good and God is a God of all seasons. Each day that he gives us we can find beauty to enjoy it; whether it be hot and sunny, cloudy and raining, snowy and bright, or a brisk spring day. The beauty is there; we must choose to focus on it.

There is a great song I learned when I began going to church as a teen. I later learned that it is also a scripture. Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” You see it’s a choice how we respond to the weather. We can look for the beauty in each day and rejoice in it or we can choose to let the weather bring us down and discourage us.

This year as I zip up my coat, put on my thick wool socks, pull on my heavy-duty boots, add a hat and gloves, I’m not going to think how cold it is and how long it takes to get ready to just go outside. I’m going to praise God for the opportunity to enjoy his creation in different seasons. Each day is a day that the Lord has made.

Genesis 8:22: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”
