Resident concerned about proposed levy

To the editor:

Two articles published in the Sidney Daily News have given me cause for concern. The first is the school treasurer’s report published just before the end of last school year and the second is the school’s decision to place a facility maintenance and repair levy on the upcoming ballot.

If my memory serves me correctly, the school treasurer reported a projected $16 million carryover for last school year, a $16 million carryover for this school year, and a $14 million carryover for next school year. However, the school district is placing a new levy on the ballot to repair and maintain our school facilities which have suddenly fallen into serious disrepair.

There should be sufficient money available in a $16 million or even a $14 million carryover to maintain all of the school facilities, give the entire faculty a raise, and provide bussing for every child in the district.

The obvious question should not be do we need the new levy. It should be why were the facility maintenance and repair issues not previously resolved since the funds appear to have been available for at least the past two years?
