Sidney-Shelby Economic Partnership supports Issue 2, opposes 3

To the editor:

The Board of Trustees of the Sidney-Shelby Economic Partnership (formerly West Ohio Development Council) supports state Issue 2 which would amend the state’s constitution to prohibit the ballot initiative process to “grant or create a monopoly, oligopoly or cartel.” Our economy is built on the free enterprise system that provides the freedom of private businesses to operate competitively for profit with minimal governmental regulation. Issue 2, if approved, will protect the free enterprise system that has been enjoyed by businesses in Shelby County for many years.

The board does not support state Issue 3 — the constitutional amendment that would permit the legalization of marijuana. Issue 3 brings about numerous and very serious workplace concerns for our employers. Our partnership, which represents small and large businesses throughout Shelby County, seeks always to ensure a safe work environment for all of their employees. Also, if approved, this issue would cause great uncertainty for those businesses who drug test their employees. Among other concerns expressed include employment screening, employer liability, the effects of employee productivity, and other potential substance abuse issues.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees
