Defending champs edge Tipp in opener

FORT LORAMIE – The defending state champion Fort Loramie Lady Redskins cleared a big early-season hurdle Saturday when they opened the season with a 38-33 victory over visiting Tipp City in non-league girls basketball action.

The Lady Redskins got off to a good start, holding Tipp to just two points late into the opening quarter. But the Lady Red Devils came back and made it a close one the rest of the way, Loramie finally pulling away late in the game.

“Two great programs left everything on the floor tonight,” said Loramie coach Carla Siegel. “It was a tossup for the whole 32 minutes as to who was going to be victorious. In the end, we held on tight for the victory.”

Jessica Boerger had nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Lady Redskins. Olivia Quinter led the way in scoring with 12, and Holly Frey had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Tipp City has all but one starter back from a team that finished 27-1 last season. The Lady Red Devils trailed 8-4 after a quarter but led 22-21 going to the final period. But Loramie scored 17 points in that quarter alone and hit 8-of-12 free throws to pull out the win, despite shooting just 31 percent on 12-for-39.

Sidney now 2-0

SIDNEY — The Sidney Lady Jackets made it two straight wins to start the season, defeating Lehman 58-33 in non-league play Saturday.

Lehman is now 0-2.

The Lady Jackets dominated from the start, leading 13-5 after a quarter and 35-14 at the half.

Lehman had no answer for Sidney senior Sylvia Hudson, who finished with 23 points and got to the line 13 times in the game, 12 in the first half. Celena Taborn added nine.

Alanna O’Leary had nine to lead Lehman.

• Lehman lost its opener Friday to Xenia Christian 37-23 in action at Lehman.

O’Leary and Kassie Lee both had eight to lead the Lady Cavs.

Botkins whips

Parkway by 20

ROCKFORD — The Botkins Lady Trojans opened with an easy win on the road, routing Parkway 63-43 in non-league girls basketball Saturday.

The Lady Trojans led by seven at the half, then blew the game open by outscoring the Lady Panthers 19-9 in the third quarter.

Sarah Bergman had 20 to lead Botkins, eight coming at the line. Kayla Heuker added 12 and Paige Lane nine.

Bergman, Jenna Pitts and Casey Woodall all grabbed nine rebounds for Botkins, and Bergman also dished out five assists.

NEW BREMEN — Anna opened the season strong, going on the road and defeating New Bremen 57-44 Saturday in girls basketball action.

The Lady Rockets broke away from a 14-14 first-quarter score to a 30-20 lead at the half, and never trailed again.

Claire Spicer led the Lady Rockets with 13, including 5-for-7 from the line. Nicole Barhorst addded 11 and Macey Huelskamp 10.

Alyse Clune had 13 for Bremen and Debbie Paul 12. Clune also had eight rebounds.

• Bremen routed Indian Lake in its opening game Friday, 65-30.

Paige Jones led the Lady Cardinals with 17 and Paul added 11.

PLEASANT HILL — The Houston Lady Wildcats dropped to 0-2 on the year after a 48-43 loss to Newton Saturday in non-league girls basketball.

The Lady Wildcats trailed just 15-14 after a quarter, but were down seven at the half.

Macey Stang had 15 to lead Houston and Jenna Winner addded 11.

Lady Jets fall

COVINGTON — Fairlawn’s Audrey Francis had a big game, but didn’t get much help as the Lady Jets were routed by Covington in their opener Saturday 57-33.

Francis scored 22 of her team’s 33 points, and also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Fairlawn trailed 14-10 after a quarter, but the deficit grew to 30-14 at the half.

Lauren Dudgeon added seven rebounds for Fairlawn.

NK loses by 3

LIMA — The points were hard to come by in the championship of the Kewpee Classic at Lima Bath Saturday, with the host team edging New Knoxville 25-22.

The Lady Rangers shut out Bath 5-0 in the first quarter, only to be outscored 12-2 in the second period. The two teams then played on even terms over the final two quarters.

Abby Lageman had eight to lead Knoxville.

KALIDA — The Minster girls opened with an easy win in high school basketball action Friday, routing Kalida 61-33.

The Lady Wildcats had three players in double figures, led by Rosie Westerbeck with 12, 10 of those coming in the first half.

Alli Fischer had 10 on the strength of three threes, and Lindsay Roetgerman also finished with 10.
