Fairlawn’s Francis scores 1,000th career point

RUSSIA — Russia used a big second quarter to take control and go on to defeat Fairlawn 57-33 in County girls basketball action Tuesday night.

Despite the loss, Fairlawn standout Audrey Francis scored the 1,000th point of her career, and she is still just a junior. She entered the game needing 10 points to reach that figure and finished with 21 to bring her career total to 1,011.

She is the third member of her family to reach the 1,000-point mark. Her sister Amanda scored 1,622 and is the all-time leading scorer in Fairlawn girls basketball. And her brother Andy scored 1,657 and is the all-time leading scorer in boys basketball at the school.

The two teams were tied at 6-6 after a quarter, but Russia outscored the Lady Jets 17-6 in the second quarter and never looked back. The Lady Raiders opened it up to 40-18 after three periods.

Maria Herron had a big game for the Lady Raiders, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with 20 points. Cameo Wilson added 12 and Jenna Cordonnier finished with 11.

Russia moves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the County. Fairlawn is 0-2 and 0-1.

Anna rolls 60-25

ANNA — The Anna Lady Rockets made it two in a row to start the season Tuesday night in County girls basketball action, routing visiting Botkins 60-25 in the first league game of the season for both teams.

Anna is now 2-0 on the year with Fairlawn coming to town next Tuesday for another league game. Botkins falls to 1-1 on the season and is also off until next Tuesday, when the Lady Trojans travel to Fort Loramie for league action.

Anna wasted no time taking control against the Lady Trojans Tuesday night, rolling to a 17-4 lead after one quarter. Botkins shaved a point off that lead at the half, but it was still 26-14, and then when the Lady Rockets again outscored Botkins 17-4 in the third quarter, it turned lopsided at 45-18.

Anna showed excellent balance in its scoring, with four players finishing in double figures. Nicole Barhorst and Claire Spicer had 13 points apiece and Macey Huelskamp and Holly Boyd added 12 each. Boyd was 5-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the three-point line.

Avery Bensman got the ball to the scorers, finishing with nine assists. And she also added five steals.

For Botkins, Kayla Heuker scored 12 points, but no other Lady Trojan managed more than four points. Sarah Bergman pulled down seven rebounds.

Anna canned 24-for-53 from the field for 45 percent while holding Botkins to just 9-for-37, 24 percent.

Houston loses

third straight

NEW KNOXVILLE — Houston lost its third in a row to start the season, falling to New Knoxville in non-league action Tuesday night 43-25.

The Lady Rangers go to 2-1 on the year with the victory.

Knoxville controlled things from the start, leading 14-6 after a quarter and 27-15 at the half.

Abby Lageman had 11 and Rachel Leffel 10 for the winners, who were 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Jenna Winner had 10 points for Houston.

Versailles falls

to Tipp City

VERSAILLES — Tipp City bounced back from its loss to Fort Loramie on Saturday to beat Versailles 54-48 in action Tuesday night at Versailles.

The loss was the first for Versailles after two straight wins. Both teams are now 2-1.

For the Lady Tigers, Danielle Winner had 17 and Kami McEldowney 10.
